The Calling by Priya Kumar - A book review

There are many self help books or books dealing with discovery of the self but what's different about 'The Calling' by Priya Kumar, is that it's a work of fiction and yet it leads you on to the route of self discovery. The book promises doses of gyan that are bound to have an impact on your life but these doses come to you in a pretty engaging and straightforward manner. If you are like me and prefer fiction over non-fiction, and yet want to discover ways to understand yourself and your purpose, then 'The Calling' might just be the book for you.

'The Calling' is a spiritual adventure, an encounter with the truth, the wisdom and the force that is innate to us all. The book introduces us to the protagonist, Arjun, who is at the brink of a divorce and a personal breakdown. His life is in shambles, be it his personal or professional life. An accident leads him to a Sadhu who tells him that his life can change and he can understand his true purpose if he heads to Hemkund Sahib. Arjun is intrigued and somewhere feels that a trip will help him unwind and escape his reality. On his way to Hemkund Sahib, Arjun has several existential episodes that finally help him understand himself, his mistakes and his way ahead in the journey of life.

My rating for this book is 3.5/5

What I really like about this book is that for one it has a really interesting story. I actually have been thinking of going to Hemkund Sahib myself ever since I started reading it. There is mysticism and answers to the existential questions that keep cropping in our lives from time to time. During the course of our daily lives, somewhere we forget who we are or get so caught-up that we start neglecting things and people around us. This book teaches you how such situations lead to conflicts and long lasting consequences in our life later on. Another great learning from this book is to treat everyone with love and kindness, whether they are below us in status or age or those that are an integral part of  our lives. Everyone we meet in our lives has a role to play and have their own qualities, that, if, utilized properly can lead to bigger and better outcomes than those achieved by working alone. I recommend that you read this book to discover yourself and these and many such learnings that the book offers, that you may have forgotten on your journey so far.
